*** Have moisture in the soil before applying fertilizer, then water fertilizer in after application.

*** Use the correct rate: Don’t over fertilize or under fertilize. When recommendations are made by the tablespoon: Use a level tablespoon, not heaping.

*** Correct placement of the fertilizer is important. In the pot, ideal placement is in a ring towards the outer edge of the pot. Never clump fertilizer next to the stem of the plant. in the field, place the fertilizer toward the outer edge of the drip line. The drip line refers to the outer edge of the leaf canopy.

*** Have a consistent fertilizer program. Don’t let plants get into a deficiency stage. Adjust your fertilizer program according to the time of the year, the weather or the age of plants.

*** Keep in mind the pH, among other factors, will affect nutrient availability. Soil will tend to become more acidic (lower pH) over time. Have your soil tested. If you need to add lime, do not make a fertilizer application within two weeks.

*** Remember, any fertilizer can burn if misapplied or if moisture conditions become too wet or too dry.
